Yes!!! Germany made it!

Germany reached the semi finals!! And a great game too! Both teams were very passionate, they were determined to win and so they showed quick and aggressive action all the way through. Argentinia might have had the upper hand in the first half but after the Argentinian goal in the 49th minute the German team thrust forward which resulted in the equaliser from Klose in the 80th and so the game went smoothly into extended time. I'd say that both goals were about equal quality, both first-class headers.
I did find it a bit disappointing that the game was only decided in the penalty shoot out, especially because Germany played quite well in the first half of extended time but in the end it's the result that counts...
Of course you could say 'what if Argentinia's goalie wouldn't have had to be substituted?' but then, life's full of what if's. I say that both teams would have deserved victory, it was just Germany who took it.
To bad that the Argentinians didn't make very good losers and had to pick a fight in the end...

1,2,3, rice galore...

Today I finally tried out the rice cooker I'd taken along from the old flat. Add amout X of rice, add twice the amount of water, put the lid on and press 'cook' and then you can leave the rest to the machine - and when you go back to the kitchen 20 minutes later, voila: steaming, white rice!
The rice does get burned a wee bit at the bottom but when you cook for two or three bowls the burned part's proportionally so little that you wouldn't even notice it...
And for a rice cooker so cheap it does a pretty good job after all.

Come on, England!

England supporter though I am, I must say that today's match against Ecuador was quite a bit dull... the only goal was a free kick by Beckham in the 60th minute - and nothing else! Enough to win the game, very well, but if that's going to be enough to win the World Cup? I wonder.
Come on, England, show these guys that you are the inventors of this sport!

Searched and found...

Yesterday I went to Cathedral Campus to look through this pile of mail (the residence period is over and so they don't sort it out anymore) and after half an hour I finally found what I was looking for - my new credit card that has been sent there by mistake. So if you want some nice freebies that haven't been claimed yet - go there and try your luck... (only jokin') :-)
Btw, Chris, if you're interested, there's also a Vodafone bill for you lying around...

Brazil vs. Japan 4:1

So that's the inevitable outcome: Brazil vs. Japan 4:1.
Japan played quite good in the first half and after Tamada scored the 1:0 for Japan (!) in the 34th minute, incurable optimists might already have believed in a victory for Japan but then followed the equaliser from Ronaldo in the 46th and from then on everything went downhill for the 'samurais in blue'. It was a real football feast for the Brazilians with three more goals in the second half ending in the - for Japan - disastrous result. Too bad for I'd have loved to see some more from the team that almost beat Brazil in the Confederations Cup 2005 but for that Japan'd have had to beat Croatia in the last game...

They should have put him in the goal instead of Kawaguchi, I'm sure none of the samba-boys would have dared then to even come close to the Japanese box...

Which one d'ya think is better?

Ok, here's some more food for the polyglottery!
So, I've continued working on my Japanese subtitles for the movie of movies, Pulp Fiction. Next scene is the one where Jules and Vince get into the elevator, walk down the corridor to 'the door' and talk about foot massages. This time I made two versions - one version with the more clearly understandable 'textbookish style' and the second one with some Osaka ben and some Yakuza stuff implemented, making it some kind of makeshift 'Yakuza style'. As it's the first time ever for me to try using Osaka ben and Yakuza stuff I've really no idea what you think about it.
Here's what I've been thinking: It might be a good idea to restrict the 'Yakuza style' to hostile conversations and keep friendly conversations in the 'textbookish style' - not only would this keep me from blundering too much in an area of language that I've got no experience with but would also allow to clearly distinguish between hostile and friendly conversations.
Anyway, tell me your thoughts whatever they might be...

1) The 'textbookish' version:

A summer's day in Manchester

After a refreshing shower and two bowls of rice with soy sauce for breakfast this morning, I finally mounted my bicycle again for an outing to Manchester on a lovely day.

Well, the ride there was quite okay, I passed time by reciting the dialogues from Pulp Fiction (which I've watched quite often for my subtitles recently and I do know the lines of the first three scenes quite well now) and around noon I arrived in the Manc city. First thing I parked my bike and hopped on one of the free Metroshuttle city buses for a little round trip (and to rest my bum, haha) and as we pass the square in front of the town hall, what do I see? Manchester German market!! Of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity to eat some authentic German food in Britain, and so I went inside the Bavarian Beerhouse. The menu was a bit on the stereotype side and the stuff was all hopelessly overpriced but fortunately I happen to like the dishes that are German cliche and the prices, well, I just had to condone them cause, hey, how often can you eat German food in Britain? Anyway, I had some Bratwuerstl (roast sausages), Sauerkraut (you know that) and Mass (1-litre-tankard) of Hacker-Pschorr (a Bavarian beer brand). Hmm, after that I felt like a new man!

With my stomach full and my wallet pretty much empty, haha, I went on to see what else is going on and happened across a bicycle fair which was part of the events of the Manchester Bike Week. So far everything tailored for me, haha, German food and stuff about bikes... The best thing about it was though that they had a well crazy mountain bike stunt show: Those kids jumped over ramps and ladders onto platforms as high as nine feet, dropped down from that height, smashing energy drink cans with their rear wheels (!) and even had a guy lie on the floor and then lowered their front wheels so far over his face that he could almost kiss it... absolutely crackers! lol You'll notice that I've put a lot of pictures of it on - that is because it's impressed me pretty much...

Then it was already a lot later in the afternoon and I went on to the Manchester Big Screen where, who would have thought it, a footie game was on! And in front of it no drunken crowds but people sitting on benches peacefully watching the match. I mean, to Liverpool's defence I gotta say that the game was Portugal vs. Iranso you couldn't expect too heated an atmosphere anyway and probably they're not airing England games in Manchester as well but still, the show of discipline there was exemplary.

Around six then I went back to where I'd parked my bike and started on the journey back. I realised that after more than 500 miles my bike's starting to show some signs of wear and that I'm going to have to oil the chain and fasten a few screws and bolts before soon. Probably I should also change the rear tyre the profile of which is pretty much worn off by now - all that breaking...

Anyway, I had a really good day, Manchester's a great city I think (and fortunately within reach) and it seems to me that to spend a Saturday or Sunday there is always a good idea. Although it is quite far and the cycling's a bit of a bitch. Maybe next year I'ma gonna buy a Railcard and go back and forth between Liverpool and Manchester by train then - if it's cheap enough...

The Bavarian Beerhouse where they had great beer...

...and dark bread they had as well - a rarity in Britain!

Bike fair - the Manchester Bike Week

Best thing was the mountain bike stunt show - take a load of this: he's jumping down without his front wheel!

With their rear wheels they smash cans...

...jump over people lying on the ground...

...and almost make them kiss their tyres. To think of the fact that I volunteered for one of their stunts too...

Footie on the Manchester Big Sceen

Here we go, Manc-hattan for you...

England vs. Tobago 2:0! C'mon lads!!

Today I got off from work just in time for the game England vs. Tobago and, as the rest of the nation probably did as well, I followed the it on the screen. The first half was, frankly said, quite a bit disappointing but the last 20 minutes made up for that. Tobago's strength surprised me pretty much, as I didn't see them play in their match against Sweden on Saturday - the guys were motivated and were attacking England ferociously. Still, England clearly dominated the game and in the 84th minute Crouch finally started the scoring with a spectacular header - but even better was Gerrard's long distance shot in the 92th minute. That was boss!! Steve Gerraaaaard, Gerraaaaard...
If you haven't watched the game, you can see a video with the highlights here.
Next game I'm definitely going to watch is Japan vs. Croatia on Sunday at two.

Pulp Fiction

This week I started writing Japanese subtitles to the best movie ever made - Pulp Fiction. It's a really good exercise, not only because you have to translate all that colloquial talk into Japanese but also because you have to transcribe the English original first - which is forcing me to understand it word for word. I've never fuckin been aware of how many damn little fill-words are in these motherfuckin sentences, y'know what I'm sayin...
Anyway, here's one of my fav scenes, as Vince and Jules are sitting in their car and Vince tells Jules about the 'small differences' in Europe:

***Scene 2, Jules and Vince in the car***

Okay, so, tell me again about the hash-bars.

Okay, which you wanna know?

Yeah, it’s just legal there, right?

Yeah, it’s legal but it ain’t a hundred percent legal, you can’t walk into a restaurant, roll a joint and start puffin away. I mean, they want you to smoke at home or certain designated places.

Those are the hash-bars?

Yeah, it works like this: yeah, it’s legal to buy it, it’s legal to own it and if you’re the proprietor of a hash-bar it’s legal to sell it. It’s legal to carry it but that doesn’t matter cause, take a load of this, alright, if you get stopped by a cop in Amsterdam, it’s illegal for them to search you. I mean, that’s a right the cops in Amsterdam don’t have.

Oh man, I’m going, that’s what I’m going to do, I’m fuckin out.

I know you’d like it. But you know what the funny thing about Europe is?

What?

It’s the little differences. I mean, they got the same shit over there that we got here but it’s, just there it’s a little different.

Example?

Alright, when you go walk into a movie theatre in Amsterdam, you buy a beer. And I don’t mean just like an old paper cup, I’m talking about a glass of beer. And in Paris, you can buy a beer in McDonalds. You know what they call a Quarterpounder with Cheese in Paris?

They don’t call it a Quarterpounder with Cheese?

No man, they got the metric system, they don’t even know what the fuck a Quarterpounder is.

And what do they call it?

They call it ‘Royal with Cheese’.

‘Royal with Cheese’?

That’s right.

What do they call a Big Mac?

A Big Mac’s a Big Mac but they call it ‘Le Big Mac’.

‘Le Bigg Macce’… hahaha… What do they call a Whopper?

I don’t know, I didn’t go into Burger King. You know what they put on French fries in Holland instead of ketchup?

What?
何を?

Mayonnaise.

Waaaah.

Hahaha, I’ve seen them doin it man, they fuckin drown them in this shit…

Yuuuuuck…

England vs. Paraguay: 1-0, Casualties: ??

Today, after basking in the sun for a while at St. John's Garden, I went to watch the England game on the big screen. As it was an England game of course it was on, good job, and already a half hour before kick-off a largt crowd had gathered on Clayton Square. The weather was fair and the atmosphere was cheerful and England's goal to an early 1:0 topped it all. After that the game went on moderately and none too much happened but the crowd, chanting and spraying beer all around, made up for it. I got a big splosh of some orangy-sticky substance, maybe Reef, over my head, yeah, judging by the taste it was probably Reef, but I really didn't mind and in the halftime brake I went to teh toilet to wash myself.
I didn't see too much of the second half though because some guys started throwing bottles through the air and one had to watch not only the screen but also the crowd if one didn't want to be hit. Still none too bad, although, when you take into account that on the screen the message "This is a no alcohol area, alcoholic beverages are liable to confiscation" and that that was accompanied by a bunch of drunken scousers throwing things, that's fuckin ridiculous! Nevertheless, still tolerable - but when they turned the screen off then as a reaction to the bottle throwers the situation escalated. A whole lot more bottles sailed through the air and the police sent in their anti-riot squad. Visored helmets, plastic shields, clubs, dogs, everything. I saw that I could take a few photos and then I made for my bike to get out of that madness.
Nothing too much of a reason to be proud to live in Liverpool and to support England but still - England - Paraguay: 1:0! Come on England!!!

Hundstage - Dog Days

Yesterday it was the beginning of my weekend and it was well hot, so after going to the library to check out a few things I decided to pack my stuff, get on the bike and go the few miles up to the beach of Crosby. Good decision, I realised when I got there at about ten, it was still early enough so that it wasn't too crowded, at some 25 degrees it was warm enough and a pleasant breeze was steadily blowing up from the south. So after cycling the beach up and down once I settled for a nice little spot sheltered from the wind and spread out my beach towel. And then the time had finally come for me to go for a swim in the sea again after some eight years! Yeah, I couldn't believe it myself but the last time I actually swam in the sea was in Croatia in 1998!
The sea water, being in the northern parts of the Atlantic, as opposed to the Mediterranean, was pleasantly cool and also not too dirty (ok, I have to add here that I'm somewhat tolerant...) and I spent a few hours bathing and reading there. Then I went back, for at five there was the first match of the world cup, scheduled to be shown on the big screen in Liverpool. Only when I got there and turned five, there were a few football fans gathered there but the screen still showed persistently some cooking show - and no signs of switching to the match anytime soon. As I was about to gather up my stuff and leave some ten minutes later, all of a sudden a bloke with an Irish accent approaches me and asks if he can speak with me about football. "Sure, go ahead and speak", I say and it turns out that he's an interviewer from Liverpool's City Radio and that he wants some opinions about the world cup. Okay, so he asks me like what team I support, if I'd rather see a partially fit Rooney or a top fit other striker playing and so on and then I end up saying "You're listening to the world cup on City Radio Sport" in Japanese and German. Haha, so you might hear me on the radio soon. If anyone listens, that is... :-)
So, after that interlude I finally packed up my things and went to the student union bar where they had the game on, I bought myself a nice pint of Carling and watched the match there. Germany - Costa Rica 4:2. Gooooooo, Germany!!!
After seeing a good game I went home and as a good conclusion to a good day I cooked spaghetti. Hmmm...

Today it's even hotter, so I'm wearing my Jesus sandals... :D

Dreams...

It would be interesting to know a bit about dream interpretation. Last night I had a very strange dream: I dreamed that I had been convicted of a crime I didn't commit and sent to prison. Somehow I managed to break out though and was hiding in a thicket next to the prison grounds, digging a burrow for shelter and hunting small animals for food... I really wonder how my subconscious could come up with such an absurd idea and why in my dream I didn't have enough sense to rather put some distance between me and the prison...

I'm moving 2

I'm pretty much finished with making myself at home in the new flat now but it involved quite some work. The kitchen, for example, was in a disastrous state that couldn't be described as anything less than utterly disgusting. The microwave oven, when I first saw it, looked as if a medium-sized volcano had exploded right in its centre and the fridge smelled as if some dead animal had been rotting in there for the past three months. No less then two hours and half a litre of cleanser later the kitchen finally looked habitable. Student kitchens, you might say, are destined to be dirty and I'm tolerant to some point but nonetheless, I don't like dirty kitchens!
The room was in a really good state though and now, that I shelved my books and put up my photos, posters and postcards the place looks inhabitated now, almost homey. What do you say?

Here cometh the summer sun...

Yesterday was the first truly warm day ever for me in Britain. Probably it wasn't so much the temperature but the rather intense sunrays were definitely announcing the advent of summer. Finally.
I woke around eight to see the stretch of grass outside my window drenched in the soft yellow of the morning sunshine and since it promised to be such a lovely day I decided not to do too much but to enjoy it to as great an extent as possible. After I'd picked up the last of my belongings at Cathedral Campus, handed in the keys and said goodbye to the place and the people I set aside the cardbord boxes and went out for a stroll down to the city. The air was placid and and full with those lush smells of early summer and when I reached the city centre I saw some small street parade moving through the central bus station. A lovely day for street parades.
Further on my way I got to Clayton Square with masses of people standing and sitting in front of the giant television screen, intently watching the match between England and Jamaica. It was only the 40th minute or so when I passed by but England was already in the lead with 4:0. Go England!
Finally I went to St. Johns Garden, which I for the first time saw in a summerly atmosphere. People walking past in sleeveless t-shirts, people playing football, people juggling, people sitting in little groups on the grass playing cards, people spreading out on the green reading.... and it was the latter that I did then, extensively alright. :-)
It was so soothing to see Liverpool in such a relaxed state, it makes you feel that humans are really human, and though quite often sullen and inconsiderate being able to share this wonderful day together with everyone else... and not even a single piece of litter caught my eyes on the walkways... haha.
Anyways, I hope the weather will stay like this all summer, I'm pretty sure that I'll have a great time then!!

I'm moooooooooving...

So, yesterday evening I finally went to the new place to pick up the keys to my new room and soon I'll start moving. Anyways, I took some photos of the room which you can see at the end of this post. It all looks very empty still but let's see if I can't make it feel homey by the weekend...
Then I had some bad luck too, I was printing out a few pages when suddenly, with a loud *crack* something inside my printer broke. I tried to fix it but no good came of it and all I got were black fingers... drat, drat, and a double drat!
